Where the photos are in Nassau

1. Parliament Square

   A two minute walk from the port: pink and white colonial style buildings, with a statue of Queen Victoria in the middle. It is free, quick, and a clean backdrop for a family photo.

2. The Queen's Staircase

   A limestone staircase carved in the 1790s, walled in by rock and greenery, with a small waterfall alongside. It was carved by enslaved people, and it is worth reading about its history before you pose for a picture there. It gets crowded, so go early.

3. Fort Fincastle

   Built in the shape of a paddle-wheeler and set on a hill, with wide views over Nassau and the harbor. There is a fee to go inside, and vendors sell souvenirs and drinks outside the gate.

4. Umbrella Street

   A short street of colorful buildings and hanging umbrellas, with small art shops and places to eat.

5. Junkanoo Beach

   The closest public beach to the ships, about a 10 to 15 minute walk west along the water. It is free, with food and drink shacks and lounger rentals. It gets crowded, so walk a little further along for more space.

How the light works

Downtown Nassau is compact, so a morning walk gets you the staircase and the fort before the crowds and the heat, and leaves the afternoon for the beach. Pastel colonial buildings look best in soft light, and the narrow shade on the old streets is kind to faces.

Before you go ashore

Nassau's ships dock at Prince George Wharf, right downtown. The Queen's Staircase, Fort Fincastle, the Straw Market and Junkanoo Beach are all within roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk of the wharf. Comfortable shoes matter more here than a taxi.
