Jetty Park
A beachfront park near the cruise terminals, with views of cruise ships sailing past. It is popular for fishing and for watching rocket launches, and it is where a picture of your own ship leaving would come from if someone else were on shore.
Cocoa Beach Pier
Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier is a longtime local landmark with fishing, beach rentals, shops, dining and live entertainment out over the water. Cocoa Beach is about five to six miles south of the port, roughly ten minutes.
Ron Jon Surf Shop
The huge shop that anchors the Cocoa Beach strip is open 24 hours, and its big building is a classic Florida stop for a group picture.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
About 20 minutes from the port, with Space Shuttle Atlantis, the Astronaut Hall of Fame and a bus tour out to the Apollo and Saturn V center. It takes several hours, so it suits the day before you sail.
A rocket launch
Jetty Park is a favorite place to watch launches. If one is scheduled the morning you board, check the time: a rocket rising over the water is a picture people remember for years.
How the light works
The coast faces east into the Atlantic, so the beaches catch soft light early and the crowds arrive later. Boarding is around midday, when the sun is high, so make the beach picture the first thing of the day. The ship turns out through the port channel into the ocean at sail-away, and the low afternoon sun makes a warm picture of the wake.
Before you board
Port Canaveral is a working port with numbered terminals along its channel, so find your terminal in your boarding documents before you head to the beach. Cocoa Beach is about ten minutes from the port and Kennedy Space Center about twenty, but traffic near the port can thicken on embarkation days, so leave yourself your own cushion.
