Falmouth is a Georgian town with a cruise pier at its edge, and the day out of it is a river, a lagoon and a set of great houses. Even the walk off the pier has the pictures a postcard would want.

Historic Falmouth
The town has more Georgian era buildings than any other in the Caribbean, and the waterfront district is full of them, so a walk from the pier is a walk through the 1800s.
Martha Brae River rafting
A three mile float down a calm river on a 30 foot bamboo raft poled by a local captain, about eight kilometers from the pier. The river is quiet and green, and the raftsmen tell the stories as you go.
The Luminous Lagoon
Also known as Glistening Waters, about ten minutes from the pier and among the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. Tours run after dark, so check that your ship stays late enough.
Greenwood Great House
One of the great houses within easy reach of the town, from the days of the sugar plantations, with a big veranda and a view over the countryside.
Dunn's River Falls
The famous 55 meter terraced falls at Ocho Rios are a longer excursion, four to five hours including the drive, so it is a full commitment of the port day.
How the light works
The river runs under trees, so the raft is in dappled shade: faces look softer than they would on the open water, and the greens glow. Keep the phone dry and shoot in short bursts as the raft moves. In the old town, the pastel Georgian fronts look best in the warm light of late morning.
Before you go ashore
The cruise pier is at the edge of the historic town, so the Georgian waterfront is a short walk. The river and the great houses are a few kilometers away, and Dunn's River Falls is a much longer trip, so book those with a tour that gets you back before all-aboard. Wear shoes that can get wet.
