1. Dunn's River Falls

   About four kilometers from the port, roughly ten minutes by taxi, a series of limestone terraces where you climb up through the cascades. The falls drop about 180 meters to the sea, and the climb takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on your pace.

2. Mystic Mountain

   An eco adventure park on a jungle hillside directly above Dunn's River Falls, about three kilometers from the port. A chairlift carries you up through the rainforest canopy, and from the top the views run over the treetops to the sea.

3. The Blue Hole

   Also called Island Gully Falls, about 11 kilometers inland and a 20 minute drive, with turquoise mineral pools, rope swings and cliff jumps fed by the White River. It is quieter than Dunn's River and much less crowded.

4. Konoko Falls and Park

   A calmer, more relaxed alternative to the big waterfalls, with botanical gardens, shaded walking paths and a smaller waterfall you can climb, well suited to families.

5. Fern Gully

   A winding three mile road that starts in Ocho Rios and ends in the community of Colgate, closed over by giant ferns so that it looks like a green tunnel. Craft vendors sit along the road, with carved wooden figures to pose beside.

How the light works

The falls and the pools are under trees, and the sun through leaves makes spots and streaks on faces, so have people step into open shade for the portrait and keep the waterfall shots for the moment you are wet and laughing. Fern Gully is a road you drive through, so ask the driver to slow down at the best stretch, where the light filters through the ferns.

Before you go ashore

Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain and the Blue Hole are all a short taxi ride from the cruise port, but they are three different trips, and the Blue Hole is the farthest. Wear shoes that grip wet rock and keep the phone in a waterproof bag if you are climbing. Watch the all-aboard time: the waterfall climb is slower than it looks.
